The performance of the new generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jet was praised by senior Air Force officials during recent operations in the Middle East. This fighter showcased its ability to maintain intense combat operations during the Epic Fury and Midnight Hammer missions.
Performance in Combat Conditions
General Brian Lidle and Colonel Charles A. Fallon referenced the capabilities of the F-35 fleet in executing missions under combat conditions at the 2026 Air and Space Conference. These remarks came as an independent entity had assessed the combat readiness of this fighter just a few months prior.
Lidle stated, "When resources are properly supplied, we have undoubtedly shown how this aircraft can perform in combat." Air Force officials pointed out several positive aspects of this fighter during recent combat operations.
Logistical Challenges and Maintenance Capability
Aircraft deployed in hostile environments may face a greater need for spare parts, which depends on the logistics supply chain. However, Lidle emphasized that the F-35 was able to maintain high mission capability rates during prolonged periods of intense combat, despite potential challenges.
Fallon also referred to the maintenance profile of this fighter, saying, "For the fourth-generation flight line, we typically saw hydraulic fluids and oil spread everywhere, but the F-35 flight line is significantly different." He continued, "When you go to the F-35 flight line, you see people resting and not doing anything."
This means that either an F-35 is down and needs parts, or it just needs hot fuel and munitions for a quick turnaround. These improvements have significant impacts on survivability. Fallon stated, "When we can reduce from hours to minutes, that is really important and equates to lives saved."
One interesting point was that the F-35 was not only survivable but also capable of performing diverse missions. This necessitated the rapid introduction and approval of new weapons to respond to new missions. A process that typically takes months or years during peacetime was expedited during wartime.
Lidle expressed hope that this approach would serve as a model for faster movement in the future and help collaboration among services, allies, industry, and weapon manufacturers to come closer to a common goal.
These diverse capabilities signify increased demand for this fighter in the coming years. Fallon noted, "More than half of the fleet has been absent at any time over the past two and a half years, and this situation will not change soon." The Air Force also reported that the decrease in readiness is partly due to delays in software, access to parts, and corrosion-related issues.
