German Foreign Minister, Johan Wadeful, has requested Israel to rapidly improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. In his statements, he emphasized that his country has provided truck scanner devices to Israel for inspecting trucks that send aid to Gaza. These remarks were made ahead of his meetings with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Humanitarian Situation in Gaza
Wadeful stated that these devices have not yet been used by Israel and that this situation is "unacceptable." He has informed the Israeli government that "we have provided you with these devices so that you can use them at a border crossing and allow more humanitarian goods to enter Gaza." He described the conditions prevailing in Gaza as "truly unbearable" and emphasized the need for a rapid improvement of the situation.
Emphasis on Disarming Hamas
At the same time, Wadeful noted that a permanent improvement in the situation in Gaza is only possible if the Palestinian militant group Hamas is ultimately disarmed. He has discussed this matter with his counterparts in Turkey and Qatar and urged them to use "their channels of communication with Hamas to finally initiate the disarmament process that has been promised and agreed upon."
He emphasized the importance of this issue by stating that "just because someone takes the first step does not mean they hold the worst cards."
Campaign to Support Germany's Seat on the UN Human Rights Council
During his visit to Geneva, Wadeful is also working to support Germany's bid for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2027 to 2029. This issue has been raised as part of Germany's diplomatic goals on the international stage.
