Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, welcomed the proposal to become an "associate member" of the European Union on September 17 in Strasbourg, stating that Europe and Canada are stronger together and must strengthen their relations to protect the welfare of their citizens.
Trump's Reaction to Canada-EU Relations
These remarks were made as Donald Trump, the President of the United States, had just criticized Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, calling her comments "ridiculous." Trump also threatened to take action against the European Union if he considered Canada's associate membership proposal a hostile act.

In his speech, Carney told European representatives: "Europe and Canada are each strong. But Europe and Canada together are even stronger." He emphasized that this proposal is not aimed at creating a third block to compete with major powers, but rather to improve relations and increase resilience.
Trade Challenges and Future Cooperation
The European Union and Canada are currently facing trade challenges and pressures from Trump's management as well as from China. Trump, speaking to reporters on his way to an event in North Carolina, said: "If they do this and if I think this is a hostile act, I will impose very heavy tariffs on Europe."
In response to these criticisms, the European Commission stated that von der Leyen's proposal, which still needs approval from EU member states, is not a hostile act and aims to strengthen partnerships. Olaf Gale, a spokesperson for the European Commission, said: "The proposal to strengthen our partnership with Canada is against no one, but rather in favor of our shared strength."
Carney also pointed to the necessity of closer cooperation in various fields such as critical minerals, defense industrial capacity, artificial intelligence, energy security, and digital trade. He emphasized that "the goal of these cooperations is to create collective resilience, not self-sufficiency."
He added that Canada is seeking to establish safer connections between Europe and Asia through their shared geography.
