Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, announced that he has canceled the scheduled votes for Thursday and sent representatives home a day early. This action was taken due to the upcoming midterm election break.
Cancellation of Votes and Representatives' Reactions
This change in the legislative schedule means that members of the House will avoid voting on the impeachment resolution against Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, proposed by Republican Representative Thomas Massie. This decision comes as intense efforts are underway to introduce legislation regarding artificial intelligence. Johnson had previously reduced the pre-election session by two weeks, drawing sharp reactions from Democrats.

Concerns Over Artificial Intelligence Legislation
Democrats have urged Johnson to keep representatives in Congress to address legislative work. Pramila Jayapal, a Democratic representative, described this action as a sign of the Republican Party's fear of the possibility of bipartisan support for Hegseth's impeachment resolution. Meanwhile, representatives hoped to address oversight of artificial intelligence development and legislate on this matter, but Johnson has refrained from intervening.
Johnson emphasized that they cannot hinder the development of artificial intelligence as it relates to U.S. national security and the country's competitiveness against China. He also referenced nearly 100 Democratic representatives who called for canceling the upcoming break to establish regulations in this area.
Additionally, House leaders informed representatives that other votes regarding EPA regulations scheduled for Thursday will instead take place on Wednesday afternoon. Johnson described this decision as a rescheduling of pre-determined votes and did not consider it a cancellation of upcoming votes.
It appears that representatives will face a busy legislative agenda when they return to Congress after Election Day in November. One of their priorities will be addressing Massie's impeachment resolution against Hegseth, as this resolution will be expedited as a special measure.
