Retail sales in China grew by 0.4% in August, the lowest rate recorded since May. This decline comes as the Chinese government seeks to stimulate demand.

Retail sales in China increased by 0.4% compared to last year in August, marking the lowest growth recorded since May. These figures, released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, indicate the second consecutive decline in growth. The 1% growth in June has also fallen below 1% due to decreased demand.

Analysis of China's Economic Situation

The Chinese government has faced serious challenges regarding domestic demand since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. While exports are performing well, domestic activities have been severely impacted, negatively affecting national growth. For instance, industrial production increased by 5.2% in August, a significant improvement compared to the 4.5% growth in July and better than Bloomberg's forecast of 4.8%.

Challenges Facing the Chinese Government

The National Bureau of Statistics of China emphasized in a statement that the country's economy performed steadily in August, but pointed to external negative factors that are intensifying. This agency also noted the internal imbalance between strong supply and weak demand, highlighting that some companies are facing operational challenges. According to this agency, there is a need to strengthen infrastructure for sustainable economic improvement.

The Chinese government has set its economic growth target for this year in the range of 4.5% to 5.0%, which is the lowest target in several decades. However, published data shows that investment in fixed assets decreased by 7.2% in August compared to last year, a figure that is higher than forecasts.

Analysts have concluded that the Chinese economy is showing mixed signals. While consumption and investment are weaker than before, industrial production continues its positive trend. Zhiyu Zhang, President and Chief Economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, emphasized in a note that negative risks facing the economy exist in the third quarter as financial supports take time, and their impact on the economy becomes apparent gradually.
