The Stella Juva solar ambulance is designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and electrical grids in remote communities in Kenya. This vehicle is capable of carrying medical equipment and is currently being tested on the roads of Kenya.

The Stella Juva solar ambulance, developed by students at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, is designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and electrical grids. This project is particularly significant for remote communities that have limited access to healthcare services.

Design and Capabilities of the Ambulance

This ambulance is designed to function beyond that of a regular vehicle. Stella Juva can carry medical equipment including ultrasound devices, portable X-ray equipment, defibrillators, and refrigerators for storing medical supplies. Solar panels provide the energy needed for this vehicle and medical equipment, which helps reduce costs and increase access to healthcare services in remote areas.

Yarno Basten, one of the innovators of this project, stated that the idea emerged after discussions with non-governmental organizations active on the African continent. These organizations provided the project team with information indicating that reliance on fuel and grid electricity can sometimes be limiting and hinder effective healthcare delivery.

Performance and Testing in Real Conditions

The Stella Juva ambulance can travel up to 715 kilometers on a single charge under suitable conditions and has a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour. This prototype is currently being tested on the roads of Kenya, including dirt and rugged paths in Nuwak County. Additionally, this project is being developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals in the target communities.

Jeffrey Sadra, project leader at Amref Health Africa, stated that this vehicle can assist healthcare workers in conducting diagnostic screenings in areas with limited access to electricity. He said, "This ambulance allows us to screen mothers and newborns, identify complications earlier, and refer them in real-time."

Furthermore, Stella Juva can serve as a bridge between local health centers and larger hospitals. The World Health Organization estimates that hundreds of millions of people worldwide are covered by healthcare services that either lack access to electricity or have unreliable power supply.

For the developers of Stella Juva, the main challenge is to see whether renewable energy can help improve access to healthcare services and provide reliable energy. This project is still in the testing phase, and the team is evaluating how the ambulance performs in real-world conditions.
