On the first day of the fall semester at California State University, Northridge, student groups were distributing delicious food and information about voting with signs saying "Youth Vote". These groups offered students free donuts and heart-shaped sunglasses to encourage them to register to vote. The 105-degree Fahrenheit heat did not deter these activities, and many young people engaged in conversations with the volunteers.
One student named "Diane Tran" explained to a visitor who was disillusioned with voting the importance of civic participation in democracy. She reminded him that some elections are decided by a margin of only 400 votes. This conversation helped the student reconsider voting and ultimately led him to use a QR code to get more information about how to vote.
Will Youth Return to the Democrats?
These efforts are underway as Democrats are deeply concerned about the declining participation of youth in the upcoming elections. Various groups across the United States have adopted new strategies to attract Generation Z.
