Poland is taking steps to enhance the security of its border with Ukraine by strengthening its border stations. This decision comes after recent Russian drone attacks on a passenger train from Kyiv to Warsaw, as well as attacks in the border region of Ukraine.
New Protective Measures
Poland's Minister of Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, stated on social media platform X on Tuesday: "Recent events show that Russia's actions have jeopardized the security of all of Europe." According to the General Staff of the Polish Army, military engineers will soon reinforce border stations with protective barriers known as Hesco. These barriers consist of wire mesh and plastic baskets filled with sand designed to protect against explosions or gunfire.
Increase in Monitoring and Patrol Stations
Additionally, new monitoring and patrol stations will be established near crossing borders in Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa. These measures are aimed at enhancing security and reducing risks from external threats. Furthermore, on Sunday, the Ukrainian railway company announced that a passenger train locomotive regularly traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw was attacked at the Yahodyn border station. Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident.
It is reported that just minutes before this attack, a diplomatic train carrying security advisors from several EU member countries, including Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister of the UK, had stopped at the station. These attacks have led the Polish government to accuse Moscow of escalating tensions in Ukraine. Additionally, a gas station located only 800 meters from the Polish border was also targeted by a drone attack.
Given the acute security situation in the region, Poland appears to be strengthening all aspects of its security, and based on military assessments, further measures are likely to be taken in the near future.
