China has imposed new restrictions on the foreign travel of its citizens as of Tuesday. These regulations include a ban on departure for individuals who have violated export control laws or technology transfer rules. These measures are taken to maintain national and industrial security.
Details of the new regulations
The new regulation allows authorities to prevent the departure of individuals whose violations could "harm national industrial and technology security." Additionally, no maximum duration for these travel bans has been set. Chinese officials have referenced cases where Chinese citizens illegally transferred technology abroad after unauthorized departure from the country. The Beijing government has also justified these stringent controls as a means to protect technical knowledge.

Legal and social consequences
This regulation, published in July, allows authorities to bar citizens from leaving the country for six months to three years if they are identified as individuals who have harmed national security or China's interests abroad. Officials have also stated that these stringent controls are designed to combat illegal activities, including cross-border fraud and illegal gambling. However, critics view these laws as an expansion of government control over citizens' freedom of movement.
The regulation consists of 19 articles and also manages entry into China. Foreign nationals who provide false information in visa applications or upon entry may be banned from entering the country for one to five years. These measures reflect China's stricter approach to security and technology controls.
