NATO fighter jets shot down a drone over Lithuania on Tuesday. The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, announced this news and praised the swift response of allied forces, emphasizing the importance of military readiness against increasing Russian threats.

Nausėda wrote in a message on social media platform X: "I thank the allied personnel for their quick response. With the escalation of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, this readiness is vital for our region. Lithuania, along with NATO allies, will defend its airspace." These remarks come as Lithuania feels a heightened sense of threat due to its border with Kaliningrad, a region of Russia, as well as Belarus.
Security Threats in the Region
According to the Lithuanian government, the country's military intelligence has information indicating that Russia may be considering attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic states. This issue has raised concerns about regional security and the necessity of strengthening NATO's military presence in these countries.
In this context, the German armed forces, known as Bundeswehr, are reinforcing an armored brigade in Lithuania. This force includes 4,800 soldiers and is expected to be operational by 2027. This military reinforcement is aimed at responding to increasing threats from Russia and maintaining security in the Baltic region.
The escalation of tensions in the region due to the ongoing war in Ukraine has led Baltic countries, especially Lithuania, to feel a greater need for support and cooperation with NATO. Nausėda has also emphasized the importance of international cooperation to address security challenges.
