A multi-vehicle accident on one of South Africa's main routes early Monday morning resulted in the deaths of 21 people. This incident occurred on the N1 highway in the Western Cape province, the southernmost province of the country, and involved two Toyota minibuses and a Suzuki SUV.
Details of the Accident
According to officials, the accident took place 380 kilometers east of Cape Town, between the two small towns of Prince Albert and Leeu Gamka. This accident was one of two major accidents in the country over the past two days. Additionally, in another incident that occurred on Sunday near Ermelo in Mpumalanga province, eight people lost their lives. Fatal road accidents are recognized as a recurring problem in South Africa.
Casualties and Consequences
According to reports, eighteen people died at the scene of the accident, and three others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to 21. Additionally, four others were seriously injured. The Road Traffic Management Agency announced that the death toll may change as emergency services and officials are assessing the scene.
The country's Department of Transport reported that approximately 11,500 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2025. In 2023, another accident involving a tour bus and an armored truck in Limpopo province resulted in 20 deaths and at least 60 injuries.
