Sweden has expelled an Iranian embassy employee in Stockholm and has also summoned the ambassador of that country. This action was taken due to activities that are inconsistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, a convention that establishes the rules governing the interactions of countries with each other's diplomats.
Reasons for Expulsion and Security Concerns
Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden's Foreign Minister, announced that this decision was made to protect citizens and Swedish interests, but did not provide further details. Gunnar Strömmer, the country's Minister of Justice, stated in an interview with state media that this decision relates to Iran's alleged activities against Jewish and Israeli interests.
Strömmer said, "We know that Iran has long been taking actions that threaten Sweden's security, targeting individuals who oppose the Iranian regime as well as Jewish and Israeli interests in our country." He also added that Iran uses criminal networks to achieve its goals.
Security Claims and Consequences
Jonathan Svensson, a spokesperson for Sweden's Security Service, referenced Strömmer's statements and emphasized that Iran continues to engage in activities that pose security threats in Sweden. This includes efforts to use representatives, such as criminal networks, to carry out attacks or acts of violence.
In 2024, Sweden's Security Service accused Iran of hiring members of criminal gangs to commit "acts of violence" against Israeli interests and other interests in Sweden. Additionally, in 2023, Sweden accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of hacking a local SMS operator, which led to the sending of 15,000 text messages calling for retaliation after the burning of the Quran during protests.
