Wholesale prices in Germany rose by 6.8% in August compared to the same period last year. This price growth is particularly driven by a sharp increase in energy and raw material costs due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Price Growth Compared to Previous Months
The Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis) reported that the annual growth rate of prices rose from 5.3% in July and 4.9% in June to 6.8% in August. This increase in prices is the highest rate since February 2023, when wholesale prices faced a 9.5% rise.

Factors Contributing to Price Increases
The office also specifically noted the sharp increase in oil product prices, which rose by 36.1% compared to August 2022. Additionally, prices for minerals, metals, and semi-finished metal products increased by 27.4%. Significant annual increases were also recorded in chemical products at 13.6% and computer equipment and accessories at 11.1%.
In contrast, wholesale prices for live animals decreased by 18.3% during this period. There were also annual decreases of 10.3% for milk, dairy products, eggs, and edible fats, and a 6.7% decrease for meat and meat products.

On a monthly scale, wholesale prices in Germany increased by 0.9% in August compared to July. These statistics indicate a continuing trend of price increases in the wholesale sector in Germany and may signal economic pressures arising from international tensions and rising raw material costs.
