Producer prices in Germany in August rose by 4.6% compared to last year, exceeding expectations. Rising energy and intermediate goods costs are among the main factors behind this growth.

Producer prices in Germany in August increased by 4.6% compared to last year, which is above the market forecast of 4.1%. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), this increase is mainly due to a sharp rise in energy and intermediate goods prices.

Details of Price Increases

Compared to last month, prices increased by 1.1%, which also surpassed economists' predictions of 0.6%. Energy prices alone have risen by 8.3% compared to last year and 3.2% compared to last month, making this the largest reason for the annual price increase.

As tensions continue in Iran and the Middle East in general, prices for mineral oil products have faced a 40.5% increase compared to August 2025 and a 4.9% increase compared to last month. In particular, the price of heating oil has increased by 65.3% annually, while the prices of naphtha and motor fuel have risen by 44.4% and 37.7%, respectively.

Trends in Intermediate and Consumer Goods Prices

Natural gas distribution prices have increased by 7.5% compared to last year, and electricity prices have risen by 1.7%. However, district heating prices have decreased by 0.5%. Excluding energy, producer prices have increased by 3.1% annually and 0.2% monthly.

Regarding intermediate goods, prices have risen by 6.1% compared to last year, with the highest increase in metal prices at 14.8%. Prices for precious metals and copper products have increased by 34.6% and 11.2%, respectively.

Capital goods prices have grown by 2.4% annually, and durable consumer goods prices have risen by 2.1%. In contrast, prices for non-durable consumer goods have decreased by 2% compared to last year, primarily due to a 4.3% drop in food prices.

In particular, the price of butter has fallen by 40.5%, while the prices of pork and beef have decreased by 16.3% and 9.3%, respectively. However, vegetable oil prices have increased by 17.5%.
