Barack Obama, the former President of the United States, expressed sorrow over the passing of Sunny, his family's dog who was with them for 13 years. He described the pet as a "force of nature" and said that his family "struggled to care for him".
Characteristics of Sunny
Obama noted that Sunny was a Portuguese Water Dog, stating that he was "athletic and energetic" and often jumped on the grass of the White House's South Lawn, chasing squirrels and birds. He added that Sunny was more interested in playing and running with family members than accepting treats.
Obama also mentioned Sunny's love for his two daughters, Sasha and Malia, saying he was always around them and helped them with their activities. According to him, Sunny was very protective of his older brother, Bo, who, despite being sleepy, understood him well.
In Memory of Sunny
Obama continued by saying that Sunny had some particularly unique behaviors. He was known as a loud and messy drinker and, despite his breed, hated water. He said, "But for our family, he was almost perfect and was with us for thirteen years - always loyal, always kind, and always ready for adventure".
Obama also recalled that Sunny lived well alongside Bo, the family's first dog, who passed away in May 2021. Bo was also a Portuguese Water Dog and was given to the Obama family as a gift from former Senator Ted Kennedy.
In memory of Bo, Obama had said that he was a "gentle and constant presence" in their lives and described him as a loyal friend in good times and bad.
Born in Michigan in June 2012, Sunny came to the White House in August 2013 and was described as "the perfect little sister for Bo". Sunny's name was chosen for his cheerful personality.
