A NATO Italian fighter jet shot down a drone in the skies over Lithuania on Tuesday, which, according to the Italian Defense Minister, "likely" came from Russia. This incident occurred near the village of Pratkeu, south of the city of Kaunas.

According to the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Center, the drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, a Russian ally, shortly after midnight and was quickly targeted. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced at the Šiauliai airbase, where Italian fighters are stationed as part of NATO's Baltic air defense mission, "Last night, once again, Italian pilots intervened and shot down a threat that likely came from Russia."

Crosetto also emphasized the importance of the Italian forces' presence in Lithuania, stating: "The presence of Italian aircraft here demonstrates the value of the Atlantic alliance for Italy and the meaning of partnership." The Lithuanian Defense Minister, Arvydas Anušauskas, also stressed on social media that the drone likely carried explosives. He added: "After examining the drone's wreckage, we can more accurately determine whether this is a Russian drone and whether this action may be a provocation or if the drone belongs to another country."
Several times in recent months, Ukrainian drones have entered NATO airspace in the Baltic region. Kyiv claims that these drones have deviated from their course due to interference from Russian signals. Additionally, a drone alert was issued on Tuesday in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, and its surrounding areas.
