A group of residents in Incline Village, Nevada has set a $147,000 reward to identify those responsible for poisoning 28 trees in Lake Tahoe. Some of these trees are over 100 years old and are recognized as symbols of the area, with local residents referring to them as irreplaceable trees.

This reward includes $122,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, along with an additional $25,000 provided by the Incline Village General Improvement District. Chris Nault, a retired accountant and biotechnology industry consultant who played a role in forming this group of residents, stated: "This act is the ugliest and most selfish thing anyone could do. These trees are very valuable."

Nault believes this reward could help attract necessary information, as previous investigations had failed to yield any leads. He added: "I feel we need to try a different approach, and money can be influential."
Description of Events and Effects of Poisoning
The poisoning of these trees began in 2022, and during this time, 28 trees have been poisoned, with at least 10 of them losing their lives. Last summer, 16 trees, including 13 Jeffrey pines and three white pines, were poisoned in three separate incidents. The toxins show effects slowly, and some trees are currently displaying signs of stress, including brown needles.
The poisoning involved drilling holes near the roots of the trees and pouring chemicals into them. In 2022, six trees were poisoned, four of which died, and last year, six more trees were poisoned that managed to survive, but this year they were attacked again and all perished.
Staff from the General Improvement District are currently caring for the damaged trees and are attempting to strengthen their natural defense response using a mixture of biochar and compost. They are also manually watering the trees to reduce environmental stress.
Investigations into these incidents are ongoing, and local officials suspect that these attacks may have been aimed at increasing property values in the area. Incline Village is known as a place for the wealthy from Silicon Valley, and the lake view in this area is of high importance.
