NATO has targeted a drone over Lithuania for the first time. This news was announced by Gitanas Nausėda, the President of Lithuania, on Tuesday. The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense stated that the unmanned drone was shot down shortly after midnight by Italian Eurofighter jets.
Details of the Drone's Downing
Lithuanian officials had previously warned residents in several areas of the Baltic countries, which are members of the European Union and NATO, about potential aerial threats. Currently, no further details are available regarding the source or type of this drone. Nausėda wrote on the social media platform X: "I am grateful for the quick response of Allied personnel. Given the intensification of Russian aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region. Lithuania, along with NATO partners, will defend its airspace."

Location of the Downing and Initial Investigations
The drone was shot down in a rural area near the village of Pratkuonai, about 50 kilometers southeast of the city of Kaunas. Vilmentas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center, stated that initial findings suggest the drone likely entered Lithuania from Belarus. To date, there have been no reports of casualties or damages resulting from this incident. Parts of the drone have been found in the area where it was downed and are under investigation.
Security Threats and Military Reinforcement
Lithuania, bordering the Russian Kaliningrad region and Belarus, is one of Moscow's closest allies. Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, the country has felt an increased sense of threat. According to information provided by the Lithuanian government, the country's military intelligence services have indicated that Russia may be seeking to attack critical infrastructure in the Baltic states.
The German armed forces, Bundeswehr, are currently reinforcing a German armored brigade in Lithuania. This combat-ready and independently deployable force, which includes 4,800 military personnel, is expected to be operational by 2027.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, several incidents involving drones have been reported in Lithuania and the other two Baltic countries, Estonia and Latvia. Unmanned missiles used by Ukraine to attack targets in northwestern Russia have repeatedly mistakenly entered Baltic airspace and crashed. Additionally, Russian-made drones that have flown from Belarus have previously entered Lithuanian airspace.
Major NATO countries take turns overseeing air surveillance over Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia, as these countries do not have their own fighter jets. The Italian fighter jets are stationed at the Šiauliai military airbase in Lithuania. They last shot down a drone that had entered Latvian airspace from Belarus in August. Another drone was also targeted by NATO fighters over Estonia.
