False information about Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, has increased, particularly from Russia. These activities have peaked since the end of June 2026.

Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, is facing an increase in false information related to him, which appears to be linked to Russia. The German domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), has reported that since the end of June 2026, the frequency of these activities has significantly increased.

Analysis of Activities

These disinformation campaigns typically include videos designed to appear as if they are published by credible media outlets. According to reports, these activities are primarily conducted through social media platforms like X and other social networks. Groups involved in spreading false content about Friedrich Merz include a campaign known as Matrjoschka and the group Storm-1516.

Link to Russia and Campaign Objectives

The German government officially linked the group Storm-1516 to Russia in December 2025, after it became clear that this group was also involved in spreading false information during the German national elections in February 2025. The main objective of these campaigns is to increase social tensions, undermine trust in democratic processes, and influence political formation and decision-making.

According to the German domestic intelligence agency, this type of activity directly impacts public opinion and domestic policies. This false information can weaken the credibility of government institutions and also increase distrust within society, which in turn can lead to social and political unrest.

Challenges and Government Response

The German government has reacted strongly to these threats and is striving to combat such activities and protect its democracy and governmental institutions. The BfV agency has also emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding this type of false information and has called for citizens' cooperation in identifying and reporting these activities.

It seems that this increase in false information poses a threat not only to Friedrich Merz but to the entire political structure of Germany. Given the current trends, addressing this issue and taking effective measures to counter it is of utmost importance.
