Groups involved in spreading false content about Friedrich Merz include a campaign known as Matrjoschka and the group Storm-1516.

Link to Russia and Campaign Objectives
The German government officially linked the group Storm-1516 to Russia in December 2025, after it became clear that this group was also involved in spreading false information during the German national elections in February 2025.
